Last week, the BHS Debate and Forensics Teams traveled to Harrisonburg High School to compete in the Shenandoah Valley Forensics League Invitational. On the Debate side, Patrick Schell placed 2nd in Student Congress and Skylar Wampler and Claire Whetzel placed 6th in Public Forum Varsity.
On the Forensics side of the tournament, qualifying for championships in January, Ashley McHenry and Morgan Hill placed 4th and 5th place respectively in Serious Interpretation, Lexi Ashton and Katie Adams placed 5th and 6th respectively in Poetry, Taylor Pence placed 5th in Storytelling, Maggie Johnston and Maddie Greenawalt placed 5th in Serious Duo, and Casey Breneman and Margaret Gonyer placed 6th in Humorous Duo. Additionally, Brandon Hylton took 1st in Impromptu, Aspen Gorman took 2nd in Original Oratory, Casey Brenaman took 1st in Humorous Interp, Lexi Ashton and Katie Adams took 1st and 2nd respectively in Prose, Mattea See and Hannah Shore took 2nd and 3rd respectively in Storytelling, and Savannah Horton and Andrea Veramessa took 1st in Serious Duo.
Overall, the BHS Forensics Team took 2nd place in points. Congratulations to all of these students!
Here's a Fall recap of the BHS Marching Band!
- October 10 (Shenandoah Valley Marching Invitational) - 1st place in class, 1st in music, 1st in general effect.
Then placed 4th overall in unclassed finals, with 2nd place general effect.
- October 17 (JMU Parade of Champions) - 1st place in class, 2nd in music, 1st in visual performance, and 1st in general effect.
- October 24 (Bassett HS Drums Along the Blue Ridge) - 1st in class, 1st in music, 1st in marching, 1st in General Effect, 1st in Drum Major, 2nd in Percussion, 3rd in Guard.
Then placed 5th in unclassed finals competition.
- October 31 (VBODA Marching Assessment) - Straight 1s from all judges. Overall rating of Superior.
In the final weekend, the band earned ratings of Superior from all 7 judges at Virginia State Marching Assessment, earning an overall rating of Superior. The ratings range from 1 to 5: 1 being Superior, 2 being Excellent, 3 being Good, 4 being Fair, and 5 being Poor.
Band director, Becky Ford, created a new event called "Rockingham County / Harrisonburg City Marching Showcase" to foster a spirit of community and support among the local school bands and give a non-competitive opportunity for the kids to see each other's shows.

Congratulations to the following students for doing a great job at DECA District Competition today for competing in the individual series events.
Mathew Clark took first place in the Hotel and Lodging event and will advance to states.
Brady Duff took second place in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing event.
Sean Ewell took second place in the Quick Serve Restaurant event.
Jesse Rush took second place in the Food Marketing event.
